A belated July 4th

July 4th is one of my favorite holidays for one reason: BBQ. I love BBQ so much and it’s not just about the food. It’s also about getting a bunch of friends together and drinking beer, eating good food, and just generally chatting for hours… that’s my idea of a GOOD holiday.

In any case, this is my first July 4th to celebrate here in Hong Kong and it kind of matches up with Hong Kong’s own July 1st (i.e. handover) celebrations.

I was originally going to catch a small dinner with my friend Angela (Mommy_mok visiting us here in HK with her son Kevan) and Ivy and Larry. Angela, Ivy, and I served together in Alpha Phi Omega, Gamma Gamma chapter way back in college doing lots of volunteer service work together. I pledged together and eventually served as an officer together with Angela’s husband Evance and attended Angela and Evance’s wedding BBQ reception (I like their thinking!) five years ago but hadn’t seen either of them afterwards since I got caught up with work so it was a great, pleasant surprise that I could meet up again through Alivenotdead! In any case, it’s an honor for us to have our own internet celebrity, Mommy_mok, visiting us here with Kevan here in Hong Kong.

Kevan seems to be the center of attention whereever he goes. Everyone wants to go up and rub his tummy or hold him. It’s funny how a small kid sucks up the center of attention so quickly.


We expanded our small APhiO gettogether to invite all of my coworkers and a bunch of other friends to Korean BBQ. A bunch of us got together and dined the night away.


During dinner, I got a call from my buddy Eric who was celebrating his last night in Hong Kong before leavin for Los Angeles to start school. We walked over to the karaoke bar where he and his friends were celebrating… Partying with a two-year old in tow! We tried entertaining Kevan with “O-bla-di, O-bla-dah” and “Can’t Wait to be King”. He was dancing all around to the sound of Sun Boyz’s “Tic Tac Toe”. Very happy kid…


A great July 4th to be sure.
